Can I drive if I don’t have a licence?

You can only drive a car on the road with a licence that is approved by the Motor Vehicle Registry.

The police caught me driving with a disqualified licence. What can I do?

Driving with a disqualified license is a serious offence in the NT. You will have to go to court.
Get advice from a lawyer before you go to court.
The judge will decide your punishment in court. The judge might give you a big fine or send you to prison.
You may also lose your licence for a longer time.

How can I get a driver licence?

First you have to apply for a learner licence. After six months you can do a driving test, and if you pass you will get a driver licence.

How do I register my car?

You can ask the Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) to register a car.
You are not allowed to drive an unregistered car on a public road.

I got caught drink driving. What happens now?

If it is the first time police catch you drink driving you might get a fine.
If it is not your first time drink driving, or if police think that what you did is serious, you will go to court and the judge will decide what will happen to you.

I got caught drug driving. What happens now?

If it is the first time police catch you drug driving you may get a fine.
If it is not your first time drug driving, or if police think you did something serious, you will go to court.
In court, the judge will decide what will happen to you.

I got caught driving an unregistered car.

If you drive a car not registered with the Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR), the police can give you a fine or you may have to go to court.
The amount of money for the fine depends how many days the car was not registered and how many times you were in trouble before, for driving an unregistered car/motorbike/truck.

I had a car accident. What do I do?

Even in a small car accident, you must stop to check everyone is OK. In an emergency call 000.
If anyone is hurt or the car/truck/motorbike is damaged, you must tell police as soon as you can.
Tell the other people your name, address, phone number, number plate and insurance company if you have one.

I don’t have car insurance and just had an accident. What do I do?

If you are in a car accident and it is your fault, the other driver may want you to pay money to fix their car/truck/motorbike.

Another driver’s car hit me. It was their fault. How do I get them to fix my car?

Talk to the other person and ask them if they have insurance or if they will pay to fix your car.
You can write a letter to them that tells them how much it will cost to fix your car.
If they do not want to pay, you can get help from a lawyer.

I had a car accident and the other driver wants me to pay to fix their car. What do I do?

Who pays to fix the car depends on who cause the accident.
You may not agree that the accident was your fault.
If you have car insurance, tell your car insurance company about the accident.
The other driver might try to make you pay the cost of fixing the damage.
